Templo de San José (“Church of St Joseph”)
The majesty of this church is without equal.
2 Norte and 18 Oriente

This impressive church started out as a chapel dedicated to St Joseph, built between 1556 and 1595 when the Puebla city council named this saint as protector of the city against lightning, erecting this building to venerate him. Starting from just this chapel, which can still be seen as part of the entrance to the church, its structure was enlarged in 1628 to what you see today. The dome covered with talavera tiles is one of the most beautiful in the city, as well as its second-largest, after the dome of the Cathedral. The fine decoration of this majestic church is apparent throughout, in the facade with talavera-covered columns, in the stone sculptures, in the paintings inside, and in its main doors.

Don't miss out on the Capilla del Nazareno ("Chapel of the Nazarene") with its impressive wrought iron railings, and the baroque altarpieces and paintings found throughout this great monument of Puebla!
