Although there are lots of cultural temptations around the city, one of the most enticing landmarks in Puebla is the Cerro de Loreto y Guadalupe ("Loreto and Guadalupe Hill"), where it is possible to tour the forts of the same name, in this way remembering the military feat that constitutes one of the most important elements of Puebla's identity.

The legends say that in 1655 the godly José de la Cruz Sarmiento prayed to Our Lady of Loreto during a dangerous storm. Without a doubt, protection came down from on high, as José was struck by lightning but even though it killed his mount and some chickens he was taking to market, the horseman was unharmed. Grateful, in 1659 he initiated the construction of a shrine on the very spot where the miracle took place. Obviously, next to the one for the Virgin of Loreto, there is a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, commissioned by Don Luis Osorio and left in ruins during the siege of 1862.

During this epic moment in history, Loreto was defended by General Berriozábal, while Guadalupe was defended by General Ignacio Zaragoza. Today the "Fort of Loreto" serves as a museum centered on the theme of the Batlle of Puebla, its origins, its important figures and the importance to the French of taking the city of Puebla.

The "Fort of Guadalupe" can be toured as a museum dedicated to the site of the battle and to learn about it. Don't miss the beautiful view of the city of Puebla from these spots!
