Universidad Autónoma de Puebla
("Autonomous University of Puebla")
Over the years this has been the center of knowledge for the people of Puebla.
Av. Juan de Palafox y Mendoza and 4 Sur.
The central offices of the Autonomous University of Puebla are located in this former Jesuit school of Espíritu Santo ("Holy Spirit"). At this school, which opened in 1587, studied such notable people as Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora and Francisco Javier Clavijero. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Mexico in 1767, the building housed military personnel, and again in 1820. In 1825 it was named Colegio del Estado ("School of the State"). It was 1937 when the University of Puebla was established in this building. Among its most attractive features are its staircase, its three beautiful courtyards, its galleries with baroque domes and the "Barroco" ("Baroque") and "Paraninfo" ("Auditorium") rooms.
Don't miss the great paintings hung on the walls of the stairwell!
