Ex Palacio del Arzobispado ("Ex-Palace of the Archbishop")
Earthly architecture of heavenly quality.
16 de Septiembre and 5 Oriente.
The brick-covered facade of this building has a series of tile patterns with depictions of jars of white lilies, that symbolize the protector of the city and of the archdiocese: the Virgin Mary.
A residence for clergymen from the 17th century, in 1676 this palace had ecclesiastical courts and even a prison for clerics. After the restructuring carried out in 1792, the building got its current appearance. Since the Reform Laws bishops and clergymen have not returned to this place. Between 1861 and 1863 the building served as a seat of government. Since 1914 it was used as a school and then as the offices of the Transportation Department. Today it houses the service facilities of the Post and Telegraph Office.
